Location

The ancient maya city of Rio Azul is located in the far northeast corner of El Peten within the Maya Biosphere Reserve next to both Mexican and Belizean borders.


It is flanked to the west by the river of the same name and occupies an area of aproximately 1.3 km2.

The central area of half a square kilometer presents the largest number of buildings, 729 structures distributed in nine major groups.
It has 39 plazas sorrounded by residential and administrative buildings.

Access to Rio Azul is by dirt roads and rugged paths that are not marked. During the rainy season is almost impossible to transit through this roads even with 4 x 4 vehicles, therefore, the site can only be visited during the dry season.
